The technology of Adhesives & Sealants plays a critical role in the assembly and durability of modern portable electronics, helping bond, protect and seal components inside devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and hard drives. In the manufacturing of handheld devices, adhesives are employed to securely attach display modules, PCBs, camera lenses, batteries and other components, while sealants fill microscopic gaps to prevent ingress of dust, moisture and vapor. Typically, manufacturers use a combination of adhesive chemistries—like hot-melt, waterborne or pressure-sensitive adhesives—and sealants such as silicone or polyurethane to meet both structural and environmental demands.

The growth in demand for adhesives and sealants in handheld devices is driven by trends such as miniaturisation, lightweighting, ruggedisation, better ingress-protection ratings, and faster production cycles. These electronic-grade non-conductive bonding systems must deliver precise performance: they should cure reliably under tight heat profiles, resist thermal cycling, maintain adhesion during drop and flex events, and preserve device aesthetics without interfering with sensitive electrical pathways. As device designs become thinner and more feature-dense, adhesive and sealant solutions have to be more efficient: they need to be dispensed precisely, cure rapidly, and provide long-term reliability without compromising manufacturability. For instance, silicone sealants are often used to deliver environmental sealing around ports and edges, while adhesives maintain component alignment and shock resistance. With consumer electronics proliferating globally—especially in regions like Asia Pacific where smartphone and laptop manufacturing is booming—the need for advanced bonding and sealing solutions continues to rise. Adhesives and sealants for handheld devices are no longer just auxiliary materials; they are foundational to device performance, durability and user experience.
